The center of this thangka is the blue Throma Nagmo, the Wrathful Great Black Mother. Throma teachings originate from Dudjom Lingpa, himself an emanation of Padmasambhava.

Surrounded by a fiery expanse of wisdom flames, her blue-black body is adorned with cemetery ornaments of bone beads and her cheeks are smeared with blood. She wears a garland of 50 severed human heads, symbolizing freedom from death and rebirth.

Tied around her body are an elephant skin, a human skin and a tiger skin [symbolizing that ignorance, desire and anger have been subdued]. Her flaming orange hair is topped with a crown of five skulls above which is the head of a pig, whose grunting sounds awaken us from the sleeping state of ignorance. In her right hand, she brandishes a drigug [vajra knife] with a curved blade which she uses to cut through self-grasping.

The body beneath her feet is symbolic of the Ego, or mistaken belief in the existence of an individual self. Throma Nagmo overcomes and transforms the gods and demons of ignorance through her wrathful compassion.

In front of Throma Nagmo is the white Dakini of the East , belonging to the Vajra family. Her ornaments are identical to the central dakini; her activity is the suppression and transformation of the poisonous emotion of hatred.

The yellow Dakini of the south belongs to the Ratna family; her activity is the suppression and transformation of pride.

The red Dakini of the west belongs to the Padma family; her activity is the suppression and transformation of the poisonous emotion of desire.

The green Dakini of the North belongs to the Karma family; her wrathful activity is the suppression and transformation of the gods and demons of jealousy.

All of these dakinis are ultimately one; none are separate from our own self-nature.
