Old Tibetan Buddhist Trilogy Tsa Tsa

Shakyamuni - Akshobhya - Padmasambhava

Padmasambhava appears here with Buddha Shakyamuni [top] and the Tathāgata Akshobhya below left an Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava right.

The framing of the aureoles clearly dates this piece to the 15th - 16th centuries. Buddha Shakyamuni is sitting on a single layered lotus throne with five petals turned upward.

This trilogy, relatively unusual in its composition, depicts the two most important historic personalities for Tibetan Buddhism and the head of the Buddhas of the Vajra family. These are the historical Buddha Shakyamuni as the original founder of the teaching and Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava as the founder of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism. He is also regarded and revered in Tibet as the »Second Buddha«.

Akshobhya [Tib.: mi bskyod pa མི་བསྐྱོད་པ་] is one of the five Tathagata [or Dhyani Buddhas]. He is the head of the Buddhas of the Vajra family. The buddhas of the Vajra family are associated with the disturbing feeling of anger and, when one meditates on the forms of this family, transforms it into mirror-like wisdom.

His cardinal point is the east. His Pure Land is called »Abhirati«. The mount of Akshobhya is the elephant [below his lotus throne are accordingly depicted two of them].

Each figure is surrounded by a double beaded aureole. The entire Tsa Tsa is bordered by another larger aureole.

The reverse side has a lattice-shaped imprint of a very coarse gauze. This suggests that it was reinforced with cotton immediately after pressing.
