Clay moulding of miniature Buddhist images, called "Tsa Tsa" in Tibetan, represents a form of artistic expressions in Tibetan Buddhism. As the mouldings are not difficult to make and the material is easily obtainable, such objects of art are turned out in large quantities by the Tibetans. They can be found almost everywhere in Tibet. In the making of clay mouldings pure loess is first ground into fine dust which is then mixed with a small quantity of thin, short plant fibre. Water is added to this fibre dust mixture to form a thin paste, which is stirred until it is evenly mixed and becomes tough clay. The clay is then pressed into wooden, stone or metal moulds and is left to dry in a well ventilated place. When half dried, the mouldings are slightly trimmed with a burin [sharp tool used in engraving] and after the totally dried mouldings have been painted in colour, the become objects of Tibetan sacred art. Most of the clay mouldings show images of Buddhas and deities. Small in size, they are usually placed on domestic altars, or carried along by devotees of Buddhism for instant worship so that "the perfect body of the Buddha" may be achieved sooner. They are also believed to have the power of protecting the carriers against the attack of demons and evil spirits. Tsa-Tsa are also pressed on certain special occasions when an important person visits a great lama. Special clays are utilized and sometimes empowered colored powders or ashes from a departed teacher added. Contrary to the clay tsa tsas are tsa tsa moulds very difficult to find. The mould is composed of three pieces: metal mould, handle of yak horn and an white metal enclosure with a floral design. Mit Hilfe dieser Stempel fertigten die Tibeter Tsa Tsas mit der Abbildung von Gottheiten an. Gepresster Lehm mit kleinen buddhistischen Götter- und Heiligenfiguren, werden in der tibetischen Sprache "Tsa Tsas" genannt. Da sie leicht herzustellen sind und auch das Material problemlos zu erhalten ist, werden sie von Tibetern in großer Zahl hergestellt und sind in fast ganz Tibet zu finden. Es ist Sitte, an seinem Geburtstag für jedes erreichte Lebensjahr ein Tsa Tsa zu spenden und an speziellen Plätzen [z.B. Höhlen] niederzulegen. Die meisten Tsa Tsas zeigen Abbildungen von Buddhas und Gottheiten. Aufgrund ihrer geringen Größe findet man sie sowohl auf Hausaltären, oder sie werden von Buddhisten angebetet um die Buddhaschaft früher zu erreichen. Sie werden auch geschätzt, um Angriffe von Dämonen und bösen Geistern abzuwehren.Die Figuren werden im ersten Schritt aus reinem Lehm, feinem Staub und einer geringen Menge feiner pflanzlicher Fasern hergestellt. Wasser wird zu dieser Paste hinzugefügt und so lange verrührt bis eine harter Lehm entsteht. Der Lehm wird dann in eine hölzerne oder steinerne Form gepresst und an einen trockenen und gut gelüftetem Ort getrocknet. Nach halber Trocknungszeit werden sie mit einem scharfem Werkzeug zusätzlich graviert. Einige werden dann auch noch farbig bemalt. Im Gegensatz zu den häufig vorkommenden Tsa Tsas findet man die Tsa Tsa Stempel relativ selten. Alle Stempel haben einen Yakhorngriff. Stempel und Griff werden durch eine Metalleinfassung mit einem floralen tibetischen Motiv zusammengehalten. Die einzelnen Stempel unterscheiden sich nur geringfügig.
